About the Book
Educational Philosophy

The Philosophy of education is a field of applied philosophy that examines the aims, forms, methods, and results of education as both a process and a field of study. It is influenced both by developments within philosophy, especially questions of ethics and epistemology, and by concerns arising from instructional practice. Basically, philosophy means 'love of knowledge'. But, in general, by philosophy what is meant are the concepts, theories and views of different thinkers who opine on certain points of discussion. Hence, 'educational philosophy' covers all those theories and concepts, which educationists have propounded at different occasions from different angles. Philosophy as love of knowledge has always been an aspiration, to know more about. This book will provide deep, insight and penetrating analysis of different philosophies and philosophers in education and sufficient material to appreciate the educational philosophy in proper perspectives. Within the epistemological frame that focuses on the nature of knowledge and how we come to know, there are four major educational philosophies, each related to one or more of the general or world philosophies just discussed. These educational philosophical approaches are currently used in classrooms the world over. They are Perennialism, Essentialism, Progressivism, and Reconstructionism. These educational philosophies focus heavily on WHAT we should teach, the curriculum aspect. This book is especially suited to fit the needs of courses in educational philosophy who want their students to spend maximum time in the primary sources, while utilizing a comprehensive survey text for orientation and overview. CONTENTS : (1) Introduction (2) Meaning of Educational Philosophy (3) Philosophical Examination and Philosophy of Education (4) Philosophy of Peace Education (5) Writing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy (6) John Locke on Education (7) Philosophical Foundations of Curriculum.
